With all the summer heat we have been dealing with in the PNW we here at Sibling Grubbery needed a bit of a cool down, and nothing quite says a refreshing summer snacks quite like Shaved Ice.
Now we are not talking Snow Cones here. Those although good enough for fair food are not delicious enough to wet our appetites. We mean thinly shaved, snowy textured, fluffy ice. So we came to an unexpected spot to try this frosty treat. Hmart is a PNW specialty market specializing in all those rare asian foods which make life worth living. We could write a whole post on how much we love Hmart, but today we focused on their deli and more importantly a newer addition. Their smoothie and shaved ice stand.
We started out with the one of the more simple shaved ice they had on offer. This tasty treat comes fresh made to order with layering of condensed milk between the ice. Giving it a creamy sweetness throughout and guaranteeing that you will never reach a spot without flavor. (Avoiding the troubles we all have experienced with lesser shaved ice when reaching a spot the syrup just didn’t reach😵)
Then topped with a surprisingly tasty red bean paste, a known treat in Asian for a dessert filling or garnish but not so common here in the states. Still don’t be put off by this unusual ingredient, the paste really compliments the sweetness of the milk making for a much more balanced snack. Finally sprinkled with chopped mochi. This sweet Japanese style dumpling adds just the right amount of textural component to this treat. Very satisfying.
Still that wasn’t enough. We had to have more. So for our second shaved ice we decided to try a more bountiful dessert. Keeping all the ingredients from the first one they also layered a lightly sweet and fresh tasting berry sauce throughout giving just that right amount of acidity from the fruit to make your tongue linger on all the best ways. Then with fresh sliced to order strawberry and mango on top giving a juicy flavor and soft texture to this shaved ice. Making this less of a simple treat and more of an experience.

This was a fantastic way to cool down on a hot day and we couldn’t be happier. This is a must buy and something you will be bragging about to all of your friends.
