Hello there 2021. After all the madness of 2020 we are all looking forward to new year and a fresh start. What better way to celebrate that than with a revisit of the first spot we ever had opportunity to review here at Sibling Grubbery.
With so many restaurants and carts having closed down this last year or and the ones still open unable to have dine in customers yet, it had been hard for us to find any spots to review recently; old or new. Luckily for everyone the Portland Mercado has made things easy for us. This Latino food and community center is one of the hidden gems the southeast has to find and they have stayed open and determined during this last year.
With a brightly colorful large outdoor dining hall complete with ample seating, constant cleaning and most importantly enough coverings to keep the wind and rain away. This food community has made the ideal place to enjoy winter time snacks even in the most unfavorable conditions.
Tierra del Sol is seemingly going strong in the new world. With minimal contact and a hardworking kitchen they are keeping up with the hungry people of Portland who still want to enjoy the foodie vibe the city is best known for.
Their menu boasts a good variety of different dishes and sides to satisfy anyone’s appetite, but for this fresh start we are going back to basics. With this in mine for our revisit we decided that Street Tacos were the only possible choice.
First things first we need to talk about the sheer value of these tacos. Running at $3 per Taco they seemed to be an average deal, but when out plates arrived we were blown away by the size of these delicious Oaxaca bites. Each taco was at least double the size of other street tacos we were used to, piled high with fresh cooked meaty proteins, for less than $10 per person there was no chance we were leaving this outing remotely hungry.
Coming with a list of available meats and veggie options, we started with the Carnitas pork tacos. With a fantastic bit of sear giving them a nice texture as if they had just come off the Bbq, then moving on to the al Pastor which was so soft and tender with just a hint of that pineapple citrus flavor that piped with each bite. Finishing with a flavorful Chorizo taco which was a refreshing change of pace from the usual bland chorizo you can usually find in shops. This was a straight from the butcher delicious.
All served on a iconic looking blue corn tortilla made bright and appealing, these tacos would satisfy anyone’s cravings. If we had to look for a negative, we did note that some of the meat was bit dry and a little salty, but when accented with the variety of salsas on offer that was hardly an issue. We thoroughly enjoyed our meal.
