This last week we were enjoying the sunshine and Portland and decided we wanted to go to the beach, the beach however was uncooperative and instead of coming to us it decided to stay a few hours drive farther than we wanted to go…. so instead we got fish and chip!
So here comes Rock Paper Fish to our rescue! This recent addition to East Burnside is a welcome taste to the Portland food scene. With its sleek modern exterior opening up to a comfortable and homey dining hall. This is the perfect location to gather some friends and enjoy good old fashion comfort foods.
And as is most important for sharing food with friends, when it comes to a meal they come in hefty proportions. With a single order of fish and chips enough to serve two. With a choice of Cod or Halibut this box comes with three of their fish battered fillets and a generous serving of fries.
We went for the Halibut ourselves, it was a bit more expensive than the Cod at $16 a box, but honestly given the size of these it was a bit of a steal. And it was cooked downright perfectly. Instead of the usual beer batter, they went with a thinner and crunchier fry on this one. Which covered the perfectly tender and flavorful fish underneath. Honestly we were sad we couldn’t finish this whole meal but had a lot of fun trying.
Of course since we didn’t know how big this meal would be we also ordered something unusual. Clam Chowder Poutine, these fries were perfectly crisped and then topped with a thick and delicious Clam chowder, a good sprinkling of Bacon, Sharp Cheddar and Chives. The cheesy goodness was perfect in each bite with just a hint of citrus from the lemon, and light smokiness from the bacon. Something we have never thought to try before but now we don’t think we can live without. I wouldn’t recommend coming here without getting an order of this poutine as well. At $11 a box it is another massive dish and great deal.
For any vegetarian foodies we would also recommend the ‘Crab Cakes’ made from a combination of Artichoke, Palm, Zucchini and Chickpeas. Tasting a bit like a spinach and artichoke fritter in all the best ways. $7 for a pair of these fritters are worth it if you still have any room left.
All in all this restaurant defeated us. We were only able to finish about half of our orders and had to save the rest for another time. But we all left happy and content, knowing we had found our new go to fish and chips spot.
